DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The Houston Public Library seeks a customer-service driven, creative, and energetic Librarian II who has strong leadership skills, an ability to inspire staff, and a passion for serving as a highly engaged trainer for the HPL system. The selected candidate will serve as a trainer for peers and new employees and showcase best practices in library operations. The selected candidate will help lead in the development of training curriculum, training videos, and in-person trainings. They should be supportive and encouraging to staff as they learn new skills and model appropriate behavior for others. They will also assist in managing the Training and Professional Development Team. Successful candidates will work communicate effectively, provide exceptional customer service, and enjoy working with, learning, and teaching new and emerging technologies, be at ease multitasking in a fast-paced public service setting and enjoy interacting with people of all ages from diverse backgrounds.
Essential job duties and responsibilities for a Librarian II - Training include:
- Coordinating and conducting training for all HPL employees.
- Creating training curriculum, slideshows and videos for training, retraining, and cross-training staff.
- Leading and supervising assigned staff including providing timely and objective feedback of performance and fostering the learning and development of staff.
- Taking initiative to creatively solve problems and possessing sound decision-making skills.
- Having a strong working knowledge of Microsoft operating system and software, especially PowerPoint and Office 365.
- Having knowledge of other Internet software and media applications and other technologies, such as Smartsheet and video editing software.
- Serve as the person in charge of the team in the absence of the manager.
- Communicate and help staff of all levels with training requirements and training records, including responding to emails and helping manage the City Training Management system.
- May provide reference assistance and performing circulation functions while assisting customers at the public service desk in person or by phone.
- May perform collection development and maintenance.
- May work one evening a week and every other weekend (Saturday and/or Sunday).
- Experience providing training to colleagues.
- Knowledge of video producing and editing.
- Experience in personnel management and supervision.
- Ability to plan and organize work and skilled at prioritization.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate with others.
- Experience working with people of diverse backgrounds.
- An aptitude for communicating effectively orally and in writing.
- Bilingual skills (Spanish/English) preferred.
