About the position The Nurse I, LVN position at the Preventive Medicine Clinic within the Public Health Department is a vital role focused on delivering essential nursing services in a clinical setting. This position is grant-funded and operates on a regular full-time basis, with a work schedule from Monday to Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The primary responsibility of the LVN will be to perform basic technical nursing procedures, ensuring an efficient flow of clients through the clinic. The role emphasizes the importance of community health, particularly in addressing maternal and child health issues and chronic disease management. The Nurse I will have the opportunity to engage in health screenings, administer immunizations, and assist practitioners in various clinical tasks, contributing to the overall health and well-being of the community. In addition to clinical duties, the Nurse I will be responsible for maintaining accurate client records, ensuring confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA guidelines, and providing education to clients regarding their medications, especially those related to HIV. The position also involves gathering and preparing activity reports, managing vaccine inventory, and assisting in training new employees. The role may include minimal travel for research opportunities and community outreach, making it a dynamic position within the Public Health Department. Responsibilities • Perform health screenings within the scope of LVN practice/protocol. , • Administer immunizations and other injections as directed by the practitioner or assist other nurses as requested. , • Obtain vital signs and weight on clients prior to seeing the practitioner and assist practitioners as needed. , • Gather blood and other specimen samples as ordered by the practitioner. , • Document appropriate information in client records and report appropriate information to primary health care provider(s). , • Place lab results on charts after reviewed by practitioners and maintain confidentiality of client information as outlined in HIPAA guidelines. , • Call or fax new prescription orders and refills to pharmacy. , • Educate clients on medications and importance of adherence to medications, especially HIV medications. , • Follow-up on telephone calls received from clients, per practitioner instructions. , • Provide information to the public and private sector on health department services and issues. , • Gather information and prepare LVN activity reports included but not limited to monthly TDH vaccines. , • Stock and account for vaccines and testing material; handle inventory/security of vaccines. , • Assist in training new employees as needed. , • Assist in the coordination of programs within the department/communities served including teams for bioterrorism preparedness and response. , • Perform all other related duties as assigned. Requirements • Must have successfully completed professional LVN training through an accredited program. , • Must have two (2) full-time years of health care or related experience. , • Must hold a current Texas or multistate compact (including Texas) LVN license; Texas LVN license required within ninety (90) days of hire. , • Good knowledge of fundamental nursing concepts, practices, and procedures. , • Basic verbal and written communication skills. , • Phlebotomy knowledge. , • Basic computer skills including utilization of standard office software applications and database software. , • Bilingual in Spanish preferred.
