About the DepartmentThe Office of Academic Affairs seeks to enrich the academic success, engagement, opportunities, and skills of undergraduate students in the College of Engineering at NC State University by supporting a varied learning environment that is respectful of 21st-century engineering challenges. We promote the engineering profession and an understanding of engineering concepts and habits of mind among a broad set of constituents.
Essential Job DutiesThe primary purpose of the Teaching Academic Advisor is to teach multiple sections of introductory engineering courses and advise prospective and current students.The essential duties are to:
- Teach multiple sections of introductory engineering courses, 1-2 credit hours, each semester with a minimum of four sections per semester (60%)
- Support the development and revision of first-year engineering curriculum materials and academic advising materials under the guidance of the director and senior teaching academic advisor (10%)
- Assist with the development of Undergraduate Teaching Assistants who support all first-year engineering instructors to ensure academic support standards across all courses (7%)
- Attend regular instructor and assistant meetings across engineering first-year courses to ensure standards compliance, impacting over a dozen instructors and 1600+ students each semester (3%)
- Advise multifaceted prospective and admitted students with unique needs on admission requirements, registration, course selection, academic requirements, and other academic issues to ensure a smooth transition and academic success (5%)
- Assist with student programs such as orientations, welcome events, and First-year Engineering Design Day (10%)
- Support recruiting events and initiatives such as info sessions, open houses, and visitation days (3%)
- Serve on relevant university and college committees, develop collaborative relationships to advance department, college, and university goals, and other duties as assigned by supervisor. (2%)
- Other tasks and responsibilities may be assigned based on the needs of the organization and evolving priorities.
- Master of Science degree in engineering from an accredited college or university
- Some experience teaching and advising at the higher education level
- Commitment to working in a collaborative environment
- Professional work record characterized by effective leadership and innovation with the ability to inspire and engage students and colleagues
- Excellent written and oral communication skills with the ability to respectfully and effectively communicate with a varied constituency
- Knowledge of best practices and standards related to the delivery of instruction and advising
- Understanding of the intricacies and complexities of multifaceted student advising populations with unique needs
- Interpersonal skills to build effective bridges and collaborative relationships, with the ability to exercise good judgment, discretion, and integrity
- Understand and effectively use Microsoft applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and similar Google applications in addition to Adobe Acrobat/Fox-it
