Within our Data Science and Engineering (DSE) division, we harness the power of data to rigorously measure, optimize, and personalize our Customer Service investments. Our mission is to enable a delightful, efficient experience for every member while continuously improving our products based on the invaluable feedback our members share with us. As a Senior Data Engineer on the Customer Service team, you will sit at the intersection of technology, analytics, and customer experience, building the data foundation that drives millions of meaningful interactions each year.

Role Overview

We are seeking an experienced and highly autonomous Senior Data Engineer (L5) to join our Customer Service data team. In this role, you will collaborate closely with data engineers, software engineers, and Customer Service business owners to build reliable, scalable data pipelines, transform raw data into core business metrics, and develop custom visualization tools that surface actionable Customer Service insights across the organization.

Because our team is intentionally small, this role requires a high degree of autonomy, exceptional technical judgment, and the ability to span the entire data stack—from pipeline development and data modeling to metrics design, business analysis, and tooling. If you thrive in environments where ownership, impact, and technical excellence are paramount, this is the role for you.

Key Responsibilities

  • Build and maintain scalable data pipelines: Design, develop, and optimize data pipelines using big data technologies such as Hive, Presto, Spark, and Flink, processing tens of millions of records daily.
  • Transform raw data into business metrics: Collaborate with analysts and business stakeholders to translate complex business questions into robust, well-modeled data assets that power critical Customer Service metrics and KPIs.
  • Design flexible data models: Create adaptable data structures that gracefully accommodate changes in source data schemas, evolving business processes, and new analytical requirements.
  • Develop custom visualization tools: Partner with engineers and analysts to build intuitive dashboards and visualization tools that surface Customer Service insights to stakeholders across the company.
  • Champion data quality: Advocate for and implement data quality best practices, including validation, monitoring, alerting, and documentation, ensuring the integrity of every dataset that flows through our systems.
  • Drive technical excellence: Write clean, supportable, and well-documented code in Python or Scala, contributing to a culture of engineering craftsmanship and continuous improvement.
  • Partner cross-functionally: Communicate effectively and build productive partnerships with analysts, software engineers, data scientists, and senior business leaders to drive shared outcomes.
  • Operate with autonomy: Prioritize and execute work independently, applying strong analytical aptitude to navigate ambiguous business problems and deliver impactful solutions.

Essential Qualifications

  • Extensive big data experience: A minimum of four years engineering data pipelines using big data technologies such as Hive, Presto, Spark, or Flink on medium to large-scale datasets, including experience handling tens of millions of records.
  • Strong data modeling skills: Demonstrated ability to design data structures that are adaptable, scalable, and resilient to changes in source data or business processes.
  • Programming proficiency: Advanced skills in Python or Scala, with a genuine passion for writing clean, supportable, and maintainable code.
  • Advanced SQL expertise: Deep fluency in SQL, with a strong advocacy for data quality, correctness, and performance optimization.
  • Analytical aptitude: The ability to think critically through complex business problems such as metrics development, prioritization, and trade-off analysis.
  • Autonomy and ownership: A self-directed mindset with the capacity to prioritize work independently and deliver high-impact results in a fast-paced environment.
  • Communication and partnership skills: Excellent communication abilities and a track record of productive collaboration with analysts, engineers, and business leaders.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with customer service, contact center, or operational data.
  • Familiarity with orchestration frameworks such as Airflow, Dagster, or similar tools.
  • Experience building custom data visualization tools or working with BI platforms.
  • Exposure to machine learning workflows or experimentation platforms.
  • Background working in small, high-impact teams where ownership is paramount.
  • Experience supporting global, multi-language operations or working with international data.

Skills and Competencies for Success

Beyond technical expertise, the ideal candidate will demonstrate:

  • Systems thinking: The ability to see the big picture while sweating the details, understanding how individual components contribute to broader business outcomes.
  • Curiosity and continuous learning: A growth mindset and a passion for staying current with evolving data technologies and industry best practices.
  • Bias for action: A pragmatic, results-oriented approach to problem-solving with the judgment to balance speed and quality.
  • Collaborative leadership: The ability to influence without authority and build trust across diverse teams and functions.
  • Member obsession: A genuine commitment to improving the customer experience through data-driven insights.

Career Growth and Learning Opportunities

Whether you aspire to deepen your technical specialization, transition into management, or explore adjacent areas like data science or product analytics, arenaflex provides the environment, mentorship, and opportunities to help you achieve your career goals.
